The Courts, following Woolf, are much less likely to approve the use of Expert accountants, even if the instructing solicitor feels that there is a real need, and also where the amounts involved may be very substantial.
A consequence of this is that even if the solicitor decides that it is essential to use an Expert accountant, the costs are unlikely to be recoverable from the other party as a disbursement.
A possible way round this is for the accountant to act as a "shadow" for the solicitor, although his work will not be badged. His costs can then be charged in the solicitor's bill of costs as if the work had been done by them - as indeed it would have been if they had not sought assistance.
The advantages to the solicitor are that the claim is quantified by people skilled in forensic assessments, and they can concentrate on the legal issues.
